Product Video Case Study: ShedRain Umbrella Campaign
About Our Client
ShedRain is a multi-generational family business that’s been building umbrellas in Portland, Oregon, since 1947. We partnered with their team to create a series of product and brand videos for use across social media, e-commerce, Google Ads, B2B and wholesale marketing.
ShedRain’s design- and tech-forward approach transforms a commodity item into fashion and engineers protection from all weather. They build sustainably, offering lifetime warranties and using high-quality materials that won’t end up in the landfill.
The Challenge
ShedRain approached us to create a series of product videos and a flexible library of ready-to-edit footage for their campaign over the following year, in the lead-up to their 80th anniversary. The campaign’s goal is to highlight the legacy, expertise, and passion behind the company, its CEO, Jeff Blauer, and its products.
ShedRain would use these videos for multiple purposes across all platforms to reach consumers and its wholesale and retail partners.
ShedRain delivers on solutions. They’re always considering the end user. What are the design problems with umbrellas when traveling? When at a golf course? Or in a restaurant? They tackle these problems with innovation—making umbrellas that are ultra-slim, windproof, and come with cases that can sit on a table. Then there’s the cultural problem. Portlanders notoriously don’t use umbrellas. Part of our job was to help people rethink umbrellas as life-enhancements.
Our Approach to Brand Video Production
The craft of video work is highly collaborative. One Hundred Seconds can lead or support in different aspects of this collaboration. With this project, the client came to us with a ton of fantastic, well-formed creative ideas, and we supported their vision by providing solutions for capturing it all in a compelling way that met our high-quality production standards.
The client has pre-established relationships with those who would be on camera, deep knowledge of the company’s history, and a true, bursting passion for the products. On-set, they kept the talent on track with the marketing beats. We used our technical wherewithal to capture this beautifully, our people skills to maintain on-camera authenticity, and our knack for storytelling to distill all these beats into emotionally resonant videos that hold the audience’s attention.
Filming Product Innovation
The product videos we created in ShedRain’s showroom tell the story of the evolution of their hero products. Jeff charismatically explained the problems ShedRain was solving in creating their umbrellas and the innovation that went into their solutions, all while showcasing the umbrellas’ technical details and high-quality materials.
Capturing Legacy
We conducted a sit-down interview with Jeff to learn all about his business expertise and problem-solving ingenuity. We captured a portrait of the Blauer family members who make up ShedRain’s history, speaking together in the warehouse about their memories growing up there and the company's history. We filmed the grandfather who started the company going through their vintage umbrella archive with his grandson, reminiscent of going through family heirlooms in the attic.
The Results
With extensive planning, collaboration, and problem-solving, we created a flexible library of product and brand video assets for ShedRain’s campaign that showcases its legacy, innovation, and passion in a fun, easily digestible, and authentic way.
ShedRain has used these video assets across social media, e-commerce, and B2B marketing. After watching these videos, the viewer won't think of umbrellas the same.
