Going Electric with EVMath

About Our Client

EVMath.org has a simple mission: cut through the political nonsense surrounding electric vehicles to help people make the switch. The nonprofit venture values EVs positive impact on the environment but understands that the dollars and sense are what lead people to make their purchasing decisions.

The Challenge

EVmath.org believes that EVs are a better product for most people, most of the time. The cars should speak for themselves—they don’t require gasoline or oil changes, saving people time and money. However, there’s a lot of arguments surrounding EVs. It was One Hundred Second’s job to tell real people’s stories about their EV experience, helping viewers come to their own conclusions.

The Solution

We created 7 videos that focus on the stories of rural Oregonians who are ahead of the curve on the shift to electric. Each video highlighted a different aspect of being a rural EV owner, including test drives, cost savings, charging infrastructure, and energy efficiency. Understanding that people are still on the fence about EVs, we used a narrative framework that introduces the myths, then dispels them. We visited EV-enthusiasts in their homes and workplaces, filming their EVs tackling the rural roads.

The videos also introduce the problem that basic necessities are far from rural areas, leaving residents to rely heavily on their vehicles. This constant mileage puts a strain on trucks, which need to be relied on for heavy-duty work. We show how owning an EV is the solution!

The Results

Brandy, a mother and accountant who is married into a fifth-generation cattle ranch, depends on her EV to drive the kids to school. Their EV takes on the miles, so their truck can stay healthy for farm operations.

Chris of EC Electric gets us past our range anxiety, and we took the miles with him. We filmed his Electric truck drive the rural roads to the highways, the journey ending with the beautiful mountainrange as a backdrop. As an expert in electricity, Chris is a trusted source when he says most electrical panels have the capacity to add an EV charger without a service upgrade.

We get to see this in action with Robert, a certified energy manager who loves his truck. He puts the miles on his EV to save his truck for the hauls. We visited his 100-year-old farmhouse to show how it can handle the task of charging his EV! Robert discusses how Oregon is awash in cheap, local electrical power, making the reliance on electric more sensible than the pricier trucked-in diesel fuel.

Brandy, Robert, and Chris shared the stories of their first test drive. They made it sound so fun that we decided to take one! Alan and Derek, a father-son duo who own the TC Chevy dealership, offered a customer their first EV test drive, and we went along for the ride.
